Jean Renoir's Swamp Water (1941) marks his debut in Hollywood, though it's a bit of a rocky start—producer Darryl F. Zanuck clipped his wings hard, and film historian Alexander Sesonske notes Renoir barely owned much of the final cut. The ending? Straight from Zanuck's pen, directed by Irving Pichel. Still, this moody tale of Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp packs some real charm. Hunter Ben Ragan (Dana Andrews) tracks down fugitive Tom Keefer (Walter Brennan), who's holed up in the misty wilds after being wrongly accused of murder. Sparks fly when Ben falls for Keefer's daughter Mabel (Anne Baxter), unraveling secrets in a tight-knit backwoods community. Shot partly on location in that eerie swamp, it nails the raw, pungent vibe of swamp life—foggy hunts, hidden loyalties, and Southern grit that lingers.
